This Gaiwan, or tea brewing cup with lid, is made of white porcelain with a clear hexagonal siding that allows the color of the tea liquor to shine through with a technique called "Rice Grain". This technique is ancient and uncommonly used, where holes are carved from the porcelain and then filled with glaze that, when fired, create windows to see into the teaware. Due to the nature of this technique, small defects such as opaque bubbles in the clear sections are common.
A very well balanced and easy to use Gaiwan, we actually use this daily to brew our own teas! The porcelain warms and retains heat excellently.
